Doesn't sound like much...or does it?
Maybe you are lucky enough to earn more than this in your average week but spare a thought for the many people who don't.
£457 is now the average pre-tax weekly wage for adults in full time work according to The Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The ONS said that earnings for men in the UK were £498 a week, (up 2.9%) while those for women rose by 2.8% to £394 a week. This gives an average adult wage of £457 a week. Taking out overtime payments basic pay has risen for women than for men.
Minimum wage or illegal pay?
While £457 may not seem a huge amount to some of us spare a thought for the vast numbers being paid less than the national minimum wage. That figure is now around 292,000, which accounts for 1.2% of all employees, the same percentage as in 2006.
Of these workers, 231,000 were aged 22 or older and were thus being paid less than the minimum wage for that age group of £5.35 per hour.
However, the ONS stated that this doesn't mean they were all being paid illegally:
"For example, it is not possible to identify people such as apprentices and those undergoing training, who are exempt from the minimum wage rate or are entitled to lower rates"
The current minimum rates of pay under the national minimum wage are as follows:
- £3.40 per hour for 16 and 17 year olds
- £4.60 per hour for 18 to 21 year olds
- £5.52 per hour for those aged 22+.
It is widely known that pay below these levels is much more common among part-time workers, who in most cases tend to be women.
Revision
The ONS has made a big revision to its previous statistics on this issue; previously its 2006 estimate showed 336,000 jobs being paid less than the minimum wage. This has now been revised downwards by 40,000 to 296,000.
This means that for the last three years, the percentage of jobs paid less than the minimum wage has been steady at 1.2%. Compare that prior to the minimum wage being introduced in 1999, nearly 6% of all jobs were paid below that level.
So, is £457 above or below your weekly wage? And is it a good average wage to have?
