There is always something you can do that's money related (apart from spending), and some of those can be sensible and fun as well!
So, here are 5 things to do...
...Before you're 30!
1 Travel the world
Before you get too settled into a job and future planning, pack up your travel bag and head out into the wonderful wide world. Go see all the amazing things you want to around the globe! (although do tread carefully with your carbon footprint!)
2 Buy a house
Buying rather than renting could leave you financially better off. Having said that, the current housing market might cause to you think about this one carefully! (or just not bother...)
3 Start a pension
The best time to start planning for your inevitable retirement is right now...that way you can enjoy listening to the cricket on the radio in your shed at the bottom of the garden! (or whatever retirement related dreams you may have!)
4 Take advantage of tax efficient savings
ISAs are a tax efficient shelter for you hard earned cash and the nasty old taxman can't touch a penny of what you save in one! (So you can laugh very hard in his face if you want to!)
5 Pay less for your borrowing
Do your homework and look out for the best deals you can get on mortgages, loans and credit cards. You could end up saving yourself loads of money just by putting in some effort!
...Before you're 40!
1 Start a trust fund for your children
Student fees are on the rise, so giving your kids a helping hand early on, could male things easier to deal with financially later on. Alternatively...you could make them work for their pocket money and teach them how to save!
2 Protect your family
Your family undoubtedly relies on your income (which isn't always a comforting thought) so ensure you and your partner have adequate life and critical illness cover!
3 Pay less tax
Such a pleasing thought...but with good advice you can reduce the amount of tax you pay on your income, savings and capital gains!
4 Make a will
Scary a though as it is, you need to make sure you are in charge of where your assets go, once you have gone.
5 Update your borrowings and savings
Make sure you are still taking advantage of those mortgage, loan and credit card deals that can save you money!
...Before you're 50!
1 Check your pension
Check your retirement pot (assuming you have followed our tips and started one before you're 30!) and see how much you expect to get. Increase your payments if necessary, or top them up with a bonus or windfall...(assuming you are lucky enough to ever get such a thing!)
2 Go on a memorable family holiday
While you are keeping one eye on your finances, don't forget to take the family away for a nice holiday (assuming you want them to come with you that is!)
3 Get investing
Having a crackingly good investing bond can help provide you with a regular income or could help your cash work even harder for the future.
4 Teach your kids about money management
If they are at university age, then it makes good sense to whip 'em into shape over their financial habits...because they are not going to learn any good "habits" while studying are they?! (Not unless you call drinking copious amounts and watching daytime telly as " good habits")
5 Keep an eye on your grandparents
While doing all of the above, it's a good idea to make sure your parent's financial affairs are all in good order. Plus, it shows you care...
...Before you're 60!
1 Buy that place in the sun
And no we don't mean anywhere in England...well certainly not with our current weather! If you do want to retire abroad, it's a good idea to buy a property earlier than needed so you can then reap the rewards of renting it out! Clever eh?
2 A financial check up
Are your mortgage, investments, savings, will and insurance all working their socks for you? If not, then do something about it!
3 Consider downsizing
If the family has (finally) flown the nest, then it might be the right time to move into a smaller place and make some money while doing so.
4 Do something wonderful
Go on treat yourself! Take a flying lesson, learn a new language, go to Disney World with the grandchildren, spend 5 days watching a Test match at Lords etc.
5 Plan for the future
Make sure you check on arrangements for your retirement and also about planning for your care in later years
So just remember, as you go along in life, there are always 5 financial things you can do!
