Burglar regrets breaking into kick boxer's house

by Money Doctor Thursday 17 April, 2008

Memo to anyone considering a career as a burglar: if you must rob a home, make sure it's not one owned by a world-ranked kick boxer first!

In something that he will clearly live to regret, a burglar picked the wrong house to raid when he ended up being chased and caught by an international class kick boxer.

When Tracey Lowe of Cradley Heath, heard a noise in her house at 3am she thought it was her son Richard Cole coming home late. When she went downstairs to see what was going on she found herself in the living room face to face with a burglar.

Her screams alerted Richard, who will represent England at the World Kickboxing Championships in the summer, and her husband Duncan, who is a first dan black belt in the sport, and they gave chase...

Game over at that point for the burglar don't you think?

Tracey said:

"When I opened the living room door I expected to see Richard but there was a stranger just standing there staring at me. It was like that for several seconds, it was surreal. Then I just screamed and Richard and Duncan came running down the stairs. The burglar fled through the kitchen window where he came in and they raced after him in their pants."

Duncan went back to get his car as Richard chased the burglar over neighbouring properties. The chase ended when he caught the thief on nearby rail tracks where he pinned him down, despite a violent struggle. Richard restrained the man until police officers with dogs located them.

Tracey added: "The police were so pleased and thanked Richard for his bravery."

Richard said he was motivated by the anger that his pregnant mum had been scared and his 12-year-old sister Elle was asleep upstairs at the time. "I just thought 'you're not getting away from me', he said.

Bet the burglar wished he had though...

We're pretty sure he won't be trying burglary again anytime soon!

No doubt this will result in a whole range of criminal charges for the family concerned. I'm sure the burglar will get a huge payout as well for the 'trauma'

Most black belts of any marshal art have the presence of mind not to break someones neck, even though I'm sure he could've, had the criminal had a pop at Richard and gotten hurt, you're right Richard would probably be in custody now!

Nice one Richard! One less scum bag on the streets!

Great show Richard! I hope the police took their usual time in getting there giving you enough time to "restrain" the burglar.

Supprised Richard hasn't been arrested for using excessive force. These opportunists have their human rights like anyone.

With ref to Bob's last comment April 18th  2008 if this person broke in to your home with your family asleep what actions would you take, make the burglar  a cup of tea or give a drink and help him to steal your belongs. Wake up to your self, these type of people should be given a good kicking twice a day while locked up.
Good on you Tracey, Duncan & Richard

Richard is lucky not to have been arrested and charged with assault, these days of human rights real criminals have more rights over victims.

Bring back the police of 10 years ago!

A similiar thing happened in Grimsby the homeowner sat on the burglar for 3 hours - the police never showed up so they had to let the burglar go....

Nice work Richard!
Anyone entering your house in the dead of night to harm/ steal or whatever their intention has no rights (in my opinion). The person gave up their rights on entering and should be dealt with however the owner feels fit. If that involves the thief being hurt, then so be it!

Brilliant. The general public are so fed up with the scum bags rights, that if the government do not sort things out in these situations eg police responding in time.People will take the law into there own hands

I think if these scum bags think they have rights if they get hurt burgling your house. the law should be changed so the minute the burglar crosses the threashold he automatically gives up his rights to claim anything from the householder.therefore the householder should have the right to give  the scum bag a few pastings to see them off without fear of prosecution.! It might make numbnuts like that think a little more before they break in

Well done to Richard and the family. I agree with the comments above, criminals breach our human rights when commiting crimes against us, so they should automatically forfit their own human rights at the point the begin to commit the offence. Further to that if any judge awards them payouts for injury ect while commiting crime should reconsider their chosen career

Deb says:

I agree with everyone except Carl and Bob - what planet are they from? And I don't agree that anyone should get a kicking in jail - it's inhumane - however I DO believe we should be allowed to restrain people who have the audacity to enter our homes to steal or harm us.How dare they!If that requires knocking them unconscious then so be it. I certainly wouldn't take any chances with my child asleep upstairs.
We are all created with a fear or flight response
and it's only natural to respond in a way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Well done for catching and restraining him - hope it wasn't too uncomfortable for you on the train track!
I also think criminals should be forced by law to face their victims and apologise to them and face up to what they have done -  learn how thay have affected that person's life etc.

i agree with most on here,  if your foolish enough to break into my home and put my the safety of my family at risk, then i'm sorry but you left any human rights you think you had at the the front gate.  so well done to richard,  also domestic burgars are not taken that well in prisons

Well done to Richard. As for some of the comments on here, it appears that most have learnt their human rights law through the sun guide to law. Human rights apply to everyone as the base line of how we treat people in a civilised society. They also come with responsibilites, something you never hear the sun or others mention, but they are for all. The punishment for burglary is a maximum 14 years, it is not being tied to a train track, or beaten up twice a day. If you want those types of laws, find a party that suports them, but be careful, because they will apply to you, your family your friends just as the human rights act does. Criminals do not have more 'rights' they simply have right and responsibilities. The law allows you to use 'reasonable force' in hte circumstances you find yourself in, that can actually give you the right to kill if you believe your life or someone elses depended on it, but you can only use a resonable amount of force or else people (including the police) might be tempted to go over the top. Anyone who wants to know the truth about the human rights act and the good it has done our society in limiting hte excesses of our government, please feel free to let me know!

As for Richard, well done!

Louis says:

Tuesday 30 December, 2008 / 14:32

That's right Joe
The law does state you are allowed to defend yourself using reasonable force you can actually hit someone for just making you feel threatened , You have to know what to say and how to deal with the whole situation from beginning to end.
As a fellow martial artist with over 10 years of various art forms under the belt you do actually get to a point were you long for the day were you get to teach a scum bag a lesson or two in whats right and whats wrong
Sorry Debs but i too agree with people that commit offences should lose there human rights straight away
Well done to Richard

ref Alan's response, arrival of "Mr. Blue" (policeman) being delayed long enough to "restrain" the burglar, it would take a liitle longer to "retrain" him or preferably introduce him to to a set of "train" wheels.
